Last night a group of us saw M. Night Shyamalan’s latest flick “The Happening“. He is one of my favorites, I think because there is always so much meaning and hidden beauty in his work, yes they are full of thrill and suspense, but never too much (The Village), his movies don’t leave you feeling negative or dark. At least thats my personal opinion.

The Happening is an amazing movie, but as all the pessimistic critics have been writting, the end of the movie leaves you with absolutely nothing, no clue as too what you have just endured, no happy ending or clue as to the details of the story. The purpose of this post is to ask you what you think happened, because unlike what the critics write, I don’t believe thats all there is too it. I think M. Night seems way to intelligent to make this film that predictable. I seriously think nobody got it, including me. I have a theory but thats it.

So what do you think, uh… happened…?

Ok so I found this interview with M.Night talking about The Happening and I thought it was interesting ….

M.Night - Well, we spent last year talking to scientists and developing ideas for The Happening and it has been fun. The way it really worked is that the story is science-based. I had the idea for the movie and then I asked a research assistant to check into it. “Go tell me if I just made up that part of a consciousness, a rabid ability to defend itself in the environment?” I asked her. And she came back with this stack of research papers. Often a story is loosely based on something you heard somewhere in a conversation and then you have see if it will work.

Obviously, we were heavily influenced by the scientist James Lovelock in looking at the evidence.

(Note: Scientist James Lovelock first published the outlines of the “Gaia” hypothesis, which suggests that Earth’s flora and fauna are interlocked to systematically moderate conditions in Earth’s atmosphere to make the planet more hospitable, a controversial idea best known from his 1979 book, Gaia: A New Look at Life on Earth.)

    Hmmmm…..

  2. Hmmm, I wonder if he made it up or if he heard it in a conversation, it would be interesting if he had made the film without Lovelock’s influence, to see what he would have interpreted, anyway, so it was science based…
